Keep range hood filters clean with a regular in-house schedule

Range hood filter cleaning helps control combustible grease directly above your cooking line. Removing deposits from inside filters also helps maintain extraction airflow, so heat, steam and smoke can be drawn away more effectively.

Grease and carbon trapped above open flames add fuel for a fire. One restaurant approached us for a tank after an oven fire linked to greasy filters. Regular cleaning addresses that build-up before it becomes a more serious problem.

At Chef's Choice Soak Tanks, we rent tanks that remain in your kitchen, giving staff a practical way to maintain filters without relying only on outsourced swaps.

Keep filters clear for airflow and grease control

Cleaning the exposed surfaces of a filter can leave grease trapped inside. Removing those internal deposits helps maintain extraction airflow and reduces the amount of grease travelling further into the extraction system. Regular filter cleaning also helps prevent grease from dripping onto floors and creating slip hazards.

Set your cleaning routine around kitchen workload

Weekly cleaning is the general recommendation for commercial range hood filters, although kitchens using fryers, chargrills, smokers or other grease-heavy equipment may need to clean them more often. With a tank on site, your team can clean more often or adjust the rotation to suit your kitchen’s workload rather than waiting for an external filter swap.

Range hood filters typically clean in approximately 20 minutes, making it practical to plan soaking between services. Staff remove loose debris before soaking and give the filters a quick rinse afterwards.

Some customers use an additional tank for extra filter-cleaning capacity. See our
soak tank rental and servicing page for tank sizes and rental details.

Remove internal grease without forceful water blasting

Full submersion lets heated solution reach grease trapped inside mesh and fin-style filters. Chef's Choice Soak Tanks uses biodegradable, non-caustic chemicals in tanks thermostatically controlled at 78°C, reducing manual scraping and scrubbing.

Water blasting can damage filter fins, while dishwasher spray mainly reaches exterior surfaces and may leave internal grease behind. Many commercial metal mesh and fin-style range hood filters are suitable for soaking, but material compatibility should be confirmed first. Teflon-coated items should not go in the tank.

In one demonstration, soaking cleaned a supermarket filter that a contractor assessed as needing replacement at approximately $120. For a fuller comparison of soaking, scrubbing and surface-cleaning methods, see our
filter cleaning page.

Our tanks clean removable filters only. We do not clean hood interiors, canopies, ductwork or extraction fans. Soaking filters does not replace cleaning the rest of the extraction system.

Weekly cleaning is a good general routine for commercial range hood filters, although kitchens with heavy fryer, chargrill or smoker use may need to clean them more often to prevent grease build-up.

Yes. Because the soak tank stays onsite, filters can be cleaned during quieter periods or between services. Typical range hood filters take around 20 minutes to clean, making it easier to work cleaning into the kitchen’s normal routine.

Grease trapped inside the filter can restrict airflow and increase the amount of grease carried further into the extraction system. Full submersion allows the heated solution to reach internal grease that surface cleaning may leave behind.
